Grades 1-3: Junior Level

LEVEL I - 1st Grade

All coaches at the first grade level must teach the following skills and strive to have every participant achieve this level of proficiency by the end of the season.

  1. Know where the baseline, foul line, foul line extended, paint or shoot, and center court are located.
  2. Know why foul shots are taken and what a blocking and holding foul can be called for.
  3. Dribble for speed from one end of an elementary school court to the other with the right hand in fifteen seconds
  4. Dribble for speed from one end of an elementary school court to the other with the left hand in twenty seconds.
  5. Successfully do a lay up with the dominant hand or two hands starting at the foul line using proper steps without dribbling.
  6. Demonstrate the proper steps to do a lay up using the non-dominant hand.
  7. Sink three free throws out of ten attempted from the designated free throw line for the appropriate age group.
  8. Perform properly a chest pass, a bounce pass, and a one handed pass.
  9. Demonstrate how to properly block out a player
  10. Demonstrate a two handed outlet pass.
  11. Demonstrate proper defensive position and the defensive slide.
  12. Demonstrate a jump stop
  13. Demonstrate a legal pivot while not moving the pivot foot.

Players must demonstrate proficiency at Level I prior to proceeding to Level II.

LEVEL II - 2nd Grade

Players must demonstrate proficiency at Level I prior to proceeding to Level II. At Level II the players will have achieved or be taught:

  1. All of the required skills for Level I, above
  2. Know what a player control or charging foul is and what the penalty is for the infraction.
  3. Know what a technical foul and a flagrant foul consist of.
  4. Dribble for speed from one end of an elementary school court to the other with the right hand in twelve seconds
  5. Dribble for speed from one end of an elementary school court to the other with the left hand in seventeen seconds.
  6. Successfully perform a cross over dribble.
  7. Successfully perform a reverse dribble (May use both hands to control dribble).
  8. Successfully do a lay up with the dominant hand or both hands using proper steps with a dribble started at the top of the key.
  9. Demonstrate the proper steps to do a lay up with the non-dominant hand and sink the lay up starting from the foul line using the left hand or both hands.
  10. Sink four free throws out of ten attempted from the designated free throw line for the appropriate age group.
  11. Sink one free throw out of five attempted from the designated free throw line for the appropriate age group using only one hand.
  12. Properly demonstrate a wrap around pass.
  13. Properly rebound a ball, keeping it over the head, pivot and throw a two handed outlet pass.
  14. Properly demonstrate the correct defensive position for man to man with proper foot and hand position.
  15. Properly demonstrate the forward and reverse pivot.
  16. Demonstrate a jump stop and pivot

All players must demonstrate proficiency at Level II before proceeding to Level III.

LEVEL III - 3rd Grade

  1. Properly performs all of the required skills for Level I and Level II, above.
  2. Knows where the three point circle is located.
  3. Dribble for speed from one end of an elementary school court to the other with the right hand in ten seconds
  4. Dribble for speed from one end of an elementary school court to the other with the left hand in fifteen seconds.
  5. Successfully perform a cross over dribble from the right to left hand and from the left to right hand.
  6. Successfully perform a reverse dribble using the right hand and the left hand.
  7. Successfully do a lay up with the dominant hand using proper steps with the dribble started at mid court.
  8. Successfully do a lay up with the non-dominant hand, or two hands, using proper steps with the dribble started from the top of the key.
  9. Sink five free throws out of ten attempted from the designated free throw line for the appropriate age group.
  10. Sink two free throws out of five attempted from the designated free throw line for the appropriate age group using only one hand.
  11. Sink two shots out of five attempted from the foul line.
  12. Sink three shots out of five attempted from either side of the paint.
  13. Properly rebound a ball, keeping it over the head and throw a two handed outlet pass to the sideline at the foul line extended.
  14. Properly demonstrate a pivot in both directions while holding a basketball with two hands.
  15. Properly demonstrate man to man defensive position with proper hand and foot position and movements as the ball is switched from side to side by the offensive player.
  16. Demonstrate a jump stop and forward pivot, then a reverse pivot, and drive to basket for lay-up.
  17. Demonstrate the triple threat position and explain the three options available to the offensive player.
